About Adnyamathanha

Inhaadi Adnyamathanha Ngawarla, Willochra camp 2007

The Teachers

Our core sessions are given by Uncle Buck McKenzie, an Adnyamathanha elder who is a fluent speaker of the language and who can transmit culture and language in a generous and stimulating way. Our teachers use several language resources, including a course created and generously loaned to us by Kaelene McMillan, a course prepared by DECS, and recordings and texts documenting unique and complex aspects of Adnyamathanha language and culture. Bernhard Schebeck has with great generosity made available to us his unpublished dictionary . Oral story telling and song also play an important role in students' cultural and linguistic learning, as does creating Adnyamathanha resources in class.

Adnyamathanha elders from Adelaide and visiting Adelaide from the Flinders Ranges and surrounding lands give guest sessions, bringing their experience and knowledge into the program. Once a year we have had intensive language camps, in which we try to go to elders for sessions. Since the course began in May 2007, we have had sessions in Adelaide, Willochra, Port Augusta and in the Flinders Ranges with Aunty Elva Bright, Aunty Margaret Brown, Aunty Denise Champion, Aunty Fanny Coulthard, Aunty Pauline Coulthard, Uncle Terrence Coulthard, Aunty Elsie Jackson, Aunty Mona Jackson, Uncle Kelvin Johnson, Aunty Judy Johnson, Aunty Vanessa Johnson, Uncle Ken McKenzie, Aunty Kaelene McMillan, Aunty Lily Neville, and Aunty Gloria Sumner.

When elders and teachers agree, classes may be recorded.
